Field Trip Overview:
Last
10th to 14th day of September of this year, we, the 67
students of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Bachelor of
Science in Computer Science had the 3rd batch of our Field Trip and
Seminars. This event was made possible by Mr. Randy S. Gamboa and Mr. Roy
Manseras; our ever-dynamic facilitators or perhaps I can say our “parents”
during the field trip, the trusted travel agency of Maynilad Tours and
Educational Services Inc. spearheaded by Ma’Anne Flores our Tour Manager, Carlo
Garin our Big Bus Tour Guide, and Kuya Byron for the Small Bus Tour Guide, the
very hard-working set of officers namely; Laian Joy Chavez, Louella Marree
Cariño, Kristine Faith Amora, Sherry Ann Marie Casal, and yours truly, and our
parents who supported and guided us throughout our journey.
The
field trip and seminar lasted for 5 days and 4 nights only. Actually, just a
little time but jam-packed with experiences and many learning. Experience, why?
Somehow all of us were actually first-timers to take a ride in a plane. We were
very excited to first-hand experience the beauty of the archipelago of the
Philippines through Seair Airlines (Tigerairways). The magnificent wonder of
seeing all the land area, bodies of waters, stunning islands, and splendid
formations of the clouds coming towards our plane. However, that great
experience comes with by hook or by crook problems. Like for an instance of
dizziness. A number of students were affected by that so as part of our
contingency plan, we have prepared some first-aid solutions like Bonamil,
ointment, and oil to mitigate the experience. Another worthy encounter was at
Enchanted Kingdom, an amusement theme park located at Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.
The mere presence of the entrance gate of the theme park is very riveting and
fascinating. How much more taking all the rides in that theme park? I mean,
even only taking 4 rides in Enchanted Kingdom that’s I guess overwhelming. Actually,
I took Space Shuttle, Rialto 3D, Roller Blades, and Anchors Away. And riding
all of those, that’s pretty marvelous. Additional thing is learning, learning
from the different company visits we had. A total of 6 companies that actually
accommodated our class namely Department of Science and Technology – Science
Technology Information Institute, Philippine Long Distance Telephone, Metro
Manila Development Authority – Traffic Engineering , Social Security System,
Tsukiden Electronics Philippines Inc. and JP Morgan Chase. We had our own favorite
company, however, all companies we had can be a prospect company to jump in
after graduating our course.
DAY 1
Today, I went to
company visit to…
In the morning, we head up to Department
of Science and Technology – Science Technology Information Institute in the
Mandaluyong City wherein it houses many divisions and branches of Department of
Science and Technology one of which is the Science Technology Information
Institute. And, in the afternoon company visit we had was in MMDA or Metro
Manila Development Authority situated in EDSA corner Orense Street in
Guadalupe, Makati City.
What I Learned?
In the first half of the 10th
of September, DOST – STII as a government
organization supporting projects in life sciences and technological advances. We
were welcomed by very warm talks from Aristotle P. Carandang and the rest of
the unit. I learned that DOST is included with unique 21 government agencies
that promotes different roles in nation building and one of it is the Science
Technology Information Institute or commonly coined as STII. In a video
presented to us, we learned about the HITS or also known as High Impact Technology
Solutions where they give information technology services and IT Innovation in
the field of health and nutrition, ICT & Education, Transport, and Energy,
Calamities and the likes. They also presented to us Project Noah, a responsive
program for disaster prevention and mitigation. However, the presentation the
program got a bit of malfunction since the internet connection within the area
got glitch. And, it is interesting to note that many innovations were actually
very helpful in our society to enhance the quality of life. Really strikes me
the most is the talk about IPV4 and IPV6 which gives me additional knowledge
about networking. I also learned that IPV4 has 4.3 Billion IPs yet almost the
entire IPV4 is used, while IPV6 has 3.4x10^38 or 340 undecillion.
And in the afternoon session of the
day, we visited Metro Manila Development Authority specifically in their
Traffic Engineering Department. MMDA is an agency of the Republic of the
Philippines created embracing the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan,
Pasay, Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasig, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas, Parañaque,
Valenzuela, Malabon, Taguig, Navotas and San Juan and the municipality of
Pateros. The MMDA performs planning, monitoring and coordinative functions, and
in the process exercise regulatory and supervisory authority over the traffic
management within Metro Manila. The agency is headed by a Chairman Francis
Tolentino, who is appointed by the President and continues to hold office at
the discretion of the appointing authority. He is vested with the rank, rights,
privileges, disqualifications, and prohibitions of a cabinet member.
What I Liked?
The best of all in the Department
of Science of Technology – Science Technology Information Technology experience
were the demonstration of Aristotle
P. Carandang wherein he delivered the presentation in full grace. Everyone
is in awe on how he made the class actively. I remembered saying this to
Jesmael G. Galindo, “Unta ma-teacher siya!” it is because he possesses great
skills in persuading people. Also, we were thrilled and amazed in the idea of
DOST – STII department is continuously providing innovation to the society to
escalate the lives of Filipinos in the archipelago.
What I didn’t like?
Things that I don’t like were in the
Metro Manila Development Authority – Traffic Engineering. First and foremost,
the venue for the plant visit was very small and not to mention the area is
very hot which leads to the crowded and unorganized students. The place is far
better in PSSCC or the Public Safety and Security Command Center here in Davao
City. Though the place is suitable for the development, the place very much a
like in Davao is the best appropriate plant visit for learning traffic
engineering. Secondly, the data center of the Metro Manila Development
Authority is a big as two huge classrooms. However, the quality of ventilation
and lighting in the place is very poor. And lastly, the monitor present in the
board room is so small. In a 21-inch wide monitor, a division of roughly 9 keys
stations were being viewed and depicted small vision of the place.
DAY 2
Today, I went to
company visit to…
We visited University of the
Philippines for the Philippine Youth Congress of Information Technology for our
National Seminar at Diliman Campus placed in Quezon City.
What I Learned?
The University of the Philippines
Information Technology Development Center (UP ITDC) is propelling itself to
greater heights, as it celebrates the 10th year of the Philippine Youth
Congress in Information Technology or Y4iT. With the theme “IT is Power:
Celebrating a Decade of Transforming Lives,” the 10th Y4iT will continue to
serve as a meeting place for the best minds in IT, while giving participants a
rare chance to know the latest IT breakthroughs, establish a network of
contacts, and see how the field looks like.
The 10th Y4iT was held at the University
Theater, UP Film Institute, and UP Ang Bahay ng Alumni. It is considered the
country’s biggest gathering of IT experts and professionals, students and
educators. Since it began in 2003, the conference has already drawn a total of
105,000 participants.
What I Liked?
Y4IT is a big convection of information
technological courses that offers a big thing to its participants like wide
array of topics that will give interest to the participants. And also Y4IT
seminars always give credits to Filipino innovation all around the world.
What I didn’t like?
Since Y4IT is a big gathering of the
information technology students around the Philippines it accommodates large
number of participants about 30,000 attendees and this means a very huge crowd.
DAY 3
Today, I went to
company visit to…
We visited Philippine Long Distance
Telephone sited in Mandaluyong City for our 3rd technical visit in
our Field Trip and Seminars. And afterwards, we had the chance to visit Social
Security System placed East Avenue in Quezon City.
What I Learned?
One of the
unforgettable things that I learned from PLDT is their Memorabilia. It is about
how PLDT survived into what they are now. Anita Ferrer discussed about the PLDT
history where during ’28 – ’38 it was called “Age of Birth” where PLDT still
uses Manual technology. I can’t also forget that during the years ’39 – ’48 was
called “Age of Destruction” because it happened to be World War II where
Japanese are not allowed to enter Philippines. During this year also they uses
the first rotary telephone in the Philippines. During year ’49 – ’58, which it
was called “Age of Hope”, they recognize the power of data with the invention
of modern underground telephone wires and cables. On year ’59 – ’68, they
called it “Age of Change”. It is the time when American president was changed
into a Filipino president in the name of Don Ramon Coanggco. It is also the Age
of Barbie as Doll and the time when they adapted computer mouse. In year ’69 –
’78 as their “Age of Control”, PLDT had become the Filipino Center of
Corporation and uses the barcoding. They first used the 1970’s telephone
handset and celebrated their 50th Anniversary. In year ’79 – ’88 as
the “Age of Revolution”, PLDT embrace newer technologies like cellular phones
and fax machines as they gain the vital role of wide communication during
people power revolution. During this age, they used 1980 payphone and X-4
Program Electronic Switching Equipment. In year ’89 – ’98 as the “Age of
Gatekeeper”, PLDT accelerate mobile and data services aiming for zero back lag
programs. While in year ’99 – ’08 as the “Age of Transformation”, PLDT
introduce the triple play services of video, voice and data. Also in this age,
creation of PLDT SME nation acquires full ownership of Smart Communication
(2000). And, the year ’09 – and Beyond, rapid technology had evolved on PLDT
since the demands of technology was ahead of the curve.
SSS or the Social
Security System welcomes us openly for our educational tour. From the topic
“Briefing on SSS” by Ms. Annie Hugo, what I learned was about the programs SSS
had for the people like Compulsory Coverage, Investment Reverse Fund and
Earning-related benefits. It covers employees of public or private sectors not
over 60 years old including self-employed, part-time, and full time. It takes
effect on the very first day of the employment. If self-employed, it takes
effect on the day of payment. Also, if you are already paying even a single
contribution, you actually have your identification card.
One good thing happened
was there were many considered citizens were actually interested in the said
tour. One of which is me, I have this very important concern on my
identification card since I have been paying my contribution to SSS when I was
still a call center agent in a BPO company. On that note, I am very apprehensive
to the thought of can I already have my ID in connection to my single
contribution and luckily they said affirmative. In addition, I can safety say
that SSS was one of the most bombarded company in terms of the questions given
to the speaker and host of the tour. We were very elaborate of our ideas of how
the company will work on this action, on how will they address this problems,
and on how the company will adapt the fast-paced modernization of technologies.
A very good citation would be the question of Randy S. Gamboa, wherein he had
the chance to ask about if there is already a law to address illegitimate workers
on not paying their contribution. In fact, many of the said illegitimate
workers came from the student workforce. According to them, they will further
investigate the said query to address students who are so-called “freelancers”
of today’s industry or market.
What I Liked?
I really liked the most these two
companies we just visited since the company was very prepared in accommodating
us. Not to mention, Philippine Long Distance Telephone was the only who talked
about technical issues in the aspect of being information technology and
computer science students. Actually, PLDT is the most valuable company we ever
visited. The way of how PLDT tailored the program and showing us the technical
aspect of the company was perfectly awesome. We got the information we needed
like if they will implement fiber optics to support more reliable and efficient
method of implementing better lines. They also introduced to us their
innovation laboratory to wherein we had the chance to firsthand see their
upcoming inventions. The approach of PLDT in our Field Trip and Seminars is
somehow the vision we have been looking for and it’s very fulfilling.
What I didn’t like?
Overall, nothing was disgracefully
happened in terms of technical aspects in the said two plant visit since each
company we have visited really showed their best to accommodate and impart us
new learning to escalate our knowledge and consciousness.
However, one thing had a great
impact for me was the pack lunch prepared by Kabayan Hotel for us since they
are the one responsible to give us food in the afternoon. As the president of
the class, I am after the comments of my constituents. They commended the very
unprofessionalism presentation of our lunch because it was very messy and disgusting.
On the contrary, we still have reflected positive outlook in that situation.
DAY 4
Today, I went to
company visit to…
We have the chance to visit
Tsukiden Electronics Philippines Inc. formerly known as Laguna Electronics Inc.
at Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
What I Learned?
Tsukiden Electronics Philippines, Inc.
(formerly known as Laguna Electronics, Inc.) is an Electronic Manufacturing
Service (EMS) provider in the Philippines for almost 17 years. Tsukiden
Electronics Philippines, Inc. was able to establish a manufacturing plant in
Santa Rosa, Laguna, Philippines last August of 1993 and was initially engaged
in manufacturing 3.25” and 5.25” floppy disk drive and later expanded its
business in the production of mobile cellular phones and other telecommunication
devices.
Years later, Tsukiden Electronics
Philippines, Inc. was able to establish another manufacturing plant and further
increase the production of Hard Disk Drive and expanded its operation including
HDD Assembly.
As technology rise, Tsukiden Electronics
Philippines, Inc. is still able to cope with these changes, Surface Mount
Technology was introduced to further enhance the production of FDD printed wire
assembly and later ZIP drive unit as well as Flexible printed Circuit Board
production for IBM was started.
Today, Tsukiden Electronics Philippines,
Inc. continuous to expand its’ business operations with PCB assembly, COF
assembly and complete box build assembly delivering to satisfied local
customers and to global customers.
And their vision and mission is to be
the preferred company providing high value added Electronic Manufacturing
Services to our customer”.
With this key strength Tsukiden
Electronics Philippines, Inc. will improve the quality of services they offer
to their clients. The following are,
·
Using Up to date SMT technology
·
High flexibility and motivated
employees.
·
Customer focused production set-up.
·
Can do both “high mix low volume and low
mix high volume production”.
·
Can serve short lead-time product
requirement.
What I Liked?
A thing that a company must be
continuously giving is the recognition and importance of their employee. Tsukiden
Electronics Philippines, Inc. keeps on motivating their employees through
various activation like Poster Making contest, Slogan Making contest wherein
employees has the chance to win Php 500.00 for monthly winner and Php 1000.00
for the annual winner which will be feature in the company, Bikini Contest, Fun
Runs, and Coastal Clean-ups.
These are but a few of the
strategies they giving to their employees. Remember, everyone is different and
what motivates one person may not motivate another. In fact, giving the same
reward to every member of the company - not only does not inspire employees to
excel, but it may actually damage performance as top achievers see no
acknowledgment of the exceptional job they have done.
What I didn’t like?
A common problem is inevitable when we
deliver presentations is the dullness of the presenter. It is like presenting a
power point presentation without a presenter. In additional, the presentation
was given in the midst of afternoon time, a common time to take siesta time.
Everyone was very tired, sluggish, and sleepy to witness the slideshow.
DAY 5
Today, I went to
company visit to…
We visited JP Morgan Chase and Co. situated
in the progressive area of Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City. A must company
to be visited by field trip classes since it serves wide array of great
opportunity for strong workforce and business driven company to land a job.
What I Learned?
JP Morgan Chase is one of the oldest
financial institutions in the United States. With a history dating back over
200 years, here's where we stand today:
·
JP Morgan Chase is the leading global
financial services firm with assets of $2.3 trillion.
·
JP Morgan Chase operates in more than 60
countries.
·
JP Morgan Chase has more than 240,000
employees.
·
Serves millions of consumers, small
businesses and many of the world’s most prominent corporate, institutional and
government clients.
·
JP Morgan Chase is the leader in
investment banking, financial services for consumers, small business and
commercial banking, financial transaction processing, asset management and
private equity.
·
JP Morgan Chase’s stock is a component
of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
The U.S. consumer and commercial banking
businesses serve customers under the Chase brand. The consumer businesses
include: Branch, ATM, telephone and online banking, Credit cards, Small
business, Home finance and home equity loans, Auto finance, Education finance,
Retirement & Investing, Retail Checking and Merchant Services.
J.P. Morgan clients include the world's
most prominent corporations, governments, wealthy individuals and institutional
investors. These businesses use the J.P. Morgan brand: Investment Bank, Asset
Management, and Treasury Services, Worldwide Securities Services, Private
Banking, and One Equity Partners.
What I Liked?
JP Morgan Chase was built with hard
work over 200 years. JP Morgan Chase would like to create a company that all
can be proud of, and are confident that, working together, they will build the
best financial services company in the world.
Certain principles are so fundamental to
their success that they would like to describe them in some detail. If they can
adhere to these principles – and they are not in order of importance – they
will reach their goal of becoming the best financial services company in the
world. They also hope they will give you a roadmap on how and why we make their
decisions.
What I didn’t like?
If given the chance to be asked if
I have something I do not like about the plant visit we had with JP Morgan
Chase and Co., I have to say that overall the company really reflects amiable
and good-natured things. Therefore, JP Morgan Chase and Co. is a big yes for me
nothing to thrown dislikes.
APPENDIX
RECOMMENDATION
Since the first field trip until the recent field
trip conducted in the Institute of Computing, I highly recommend with full
trust Maynilad Tours and Educational Services Inc. again and again because of
these obvious reasons:
·
Maynilad Tours and Educational Services
Inc. has the legal authorization of being a travel agency like DOT
certification, DTI certification, and many other legal documents.
·
They provide full security for the
students who want to visit scenic spots to visit.
·
Very accommodating tour manager and
guides.
·
Responsible travel agency who will
provide assistance in plant visit, accommodation, effective buses, and wide
array of food selection.
For the students who will kick off their wealth to
join field trip, I suggest to prepare their money ahead of time to mitigate
submission problems. And, choose a suitable company to visit so that learning
will become more effective and efficient.
